Language Technology
As consumer electronic devices become ever more sophisticated, and as network coverage and bandwidth increase, multimedia information appliances are finding their way into every area of our lives. We are conducting research that will contribute to the information appliances of tomorrow by developing novel tools and applications for managing and searching information more effectively.
Our core interests include statistical language processing, machine translation, automatic summarization, document analysis and information extraction, information retrieval models, interactive query refinement and image retrieval.
We have developed a novel, context-sensitive dictionary to assist Japanese users with reading and learning English. This forms part of Sharp's package of translation tools available in Japan. More recently, we added a flexible Translation Memory component to this package, allowing users to exploit existing translations. Our spell checking technology appears in Sharp's handheld electronic dictionaries for the European market.
