Point of care
Modern healthcare uses a large number of diagnostic tests. Currently these tests need to be carried out in hospital laboratories. Point-of-care (POC) diagnostics is a technology that miniaturizes tests, allowing them to be carried out at a patient’s bedside, in a doctor’s surgery, or at home.
POC diagnostic tests must be accurate, produce results in only a few minutes, and use very small samples (e.g. a single drop of blood). The test chips must be also be cheap to manufacture. These constraints impose considerable technical challenges.
SLE is therefore researching novel technologies for POC diagnostic applications, including device design and fabrication, biochemistry and sensing. Using innovative microfluidic and processing technologies, our aim is to create the next generation of POC devices.
