Sharp has been engaged in the R&D of photovoltaic technology for 49 years since discovering the potential of solar energy.
Sharp’s history with solar cells began with the development of solar energy systems for lighthouses in 1966 and satellites in 1976.
We have strived to make our solar technology fail proof to operate in the harshest of environments like stormy seas and the extreme temperatures of -270°C in outer space. Lighthouses are not the easiest of places to repair nor are satellites so our solar energy systems need to be highly reliable over long life cycles.
