Displays

Sharp's liquid crystal displays are truly ubiquitous - they can be found the world over, in mobile phones, portable games, personal media players, digital cameras, navigation units and automotive instrumentation.

The European Design Centre plays an instrumental role in developing Sharp's "mobile" LCD technology for European customers' products.

mobile phone displays

For devices such as mobile phones, smart-phones and net-books, the display is one of the key defining features of the product. We develop advanced “System LCDs”, based on Sharp's high performance TFT process that allows high levels of system integration. For example, our designs typically feature power and addressing circuits integrated onto the display panel.

As new mobile devices embrace multi- media applications, yet strive to retain intuitiveness, the demands on the display are increasing. Touch input, auto-stereoscopic 3D, haptic feedback, curved and conformable image surfaces will all feature in our future generations of displays.

We are also engaged in the product development of displays with built in memory for a new range of ultra low power applications

automotive displays

LCDs are a key enabling display technology for cars, and are set to become the focal point of driver information, navigation, camera-fed imaging, and entertainment systems. Optimization of display performance over a wide range of temperatures, viewing angles and ambient lighting conditions is an essential requirement for these applications. Our designs also have to be robust to withstand usage over long lifetimes at high temperatures, humidity and vibration conditions.
